Under 75 Mortality Rate – Cardiovascular Disease – 2017-19

Description

This dataset is produced by Public Health England. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major causes of death in under 75s in England. There have been huge gains over the past decades in terms of better treatment for CVD and improvements in lifestyle, but to ensure that there continues to be a reduction in the rate of premature mortality from CVD, there needs to be concerted action in both prevention and treatment.

The exact cause of CVD isn't clear, but there are lots of things that can increase the risk of a person getting it. These are called risk factors, the more of which present, the greater the chances of developing CVD. The risk factors are;

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Inactivity
  • Being overweight or obese

Lack of exercise make it more likely that an individual will develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and be overweight - all risk factors for CVD. Inactivity can, therefore, be regarded as a key factor in the understanding and tackling of cardiovascular disease.

Living an active lifestyle can reduce the likelihood of developing CVD by up to 35%.

This dataset relates to 2017-2019.

Commentary

Whilst there are large differences across the different geographies, Black Country residents are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than people living across the rest of the country or the West Midlands.
