Exercise versus antihypertensive medication

Title
Exercise versus antihypertensive medication

Research Area
Health

Author
Naci, H et al; British Journal of Sports Medicine

Summary of Findings
This piece of research involved comparing previous studies on the effect of antihypertensive medication on blood pressure and those on the effects of exercise on blood pressure. No studies included had investigated both factors. Analysis found that when all participants were considered both medication and exercise reduced blood pressure levels, however medication was more effective. When the same method was applied to those who previously had higher blood pressure (hypertension) again both medication and exercise reduced blood pressure levels, however in this group the reduction between the two was almost identical.

Implications
As the sector forges closer links with healthcare professionals, this type of research is critical to understanding the impact that activity can have as a means of treatment to address some of the health inequalities in the Black Country.
