Tragedy for the Black Country

The Black Country Consortium Ltd. is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Joel Richards, his Uncle Adrian and Granddad Pat who were killed in the terrorist shootings in Tunisia.

Joel was one of the inspirations for the Black Country School Games, contributing significantly to the planning and delivery of both the Black Country School Games Festival 2012 and 2013. As a Wood Green Student, he was selected as the young person’s representative on the Local Organising Committee; we ensured that the Festival was driven by the young people for the young people. His mature and positive outlook gained considerable respect from the Senior Teachers and Sports Organisations in the area leading to strengthening the role and breadth of experience offered to student leaders at the Festival.

In 2012, Joel said "To be involved in the organising of the Black Country Winter School Games Festival is a great opportunity for anyone, especially a young person. For me to get first-hand experience of what is involved in organising and running a festival of this scale is a valuable learning experience and to know that I had an input into the organisation has provided me with valuable skills."

Joel at 19 years old, was a talented young sports person and a football referee who had progressed to officiate at Level 4 of the refereeing pyramid. Joel was natural football referee with an endearing and kind hearted personality.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in Tunisia.

Birmingham County FA have opened a book of condolences and people are welcome to attend their headquarters to leave a message and also leave any tributes to Joel.

A number of Joel’s refereeing colleagues have set-up a GoFundMe Account in his memory, you can find more information here:
