Move Together campaign promotes Black Country canals to boost health and wellbeing

The second wave of the Move Together campaign focuses on bringing to life the Black Country’s canal network to get people moving more and being physically active.

Vitally important water safety messaging is integrated into the NEW canalside guides for Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton, encouraging families and community groups to be active by the canals – and enjoy the waterways safely.

The Black Country is home to more than 110 miles of canals; and more than 80% of residents live within a mile of a canal. In the past, the canals were the heart of the industrial revolution and powered the region’s growth. Fast forward to today, they are now cultural and environmental assets - places to explore, protect and enjoy.

The canals offer myriad opportunities to explore, move more, experience the beauty of nature and take part in activities organised by the local authorities of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton and Black Country partners.

The Move Together campaign connects with the Black Country Canals Strategy’s vision for thriving, accessible and well-maintained waterways that improve the quality of life for communities across the region.

From gentle strolls and cycling, to nature spotting and canalside events, the waterways offer a simple and powerful way to boost physical and mental wellbeing. Being surrounded by green and blue spaces is proven to reduce stress, lift mood, and improve overall health.

Despite these opportunities, the Black Country faces challenges in reducing inactivity levels. Sport England’s Active Lives Survey identifies the Black Country as the most inactive Active Partnership area within England. Data released in April shows that 34.6% of adults were classed as inactive (the national average is 25.1%).

Move Together aims to change that. In partnership with the Canal & River Trust, the local authorities of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton councils and strategic partners, the campaign is designed to inspire active, healthier people and places by making physical activity more accessible, inclusive and part of everyday life.

Launched in May, the campaign is raising awareness of the spaces and places where people can move more and be active, showcasing the wealth of activity opportunities across the region.
